This is how the site looked before I started. It was pretty barren consisting mostly of stone and ledge.
This is the stone left over from blasting the foundation for the house. It turned out to be useful as I utilized the stone to build a new retaining wall.
I am in the process of building the retaining wall here. This was one of the most convenient walls I have ever built as all the material was literally at my feet.
The retaining wall is finished, back filled with crushed stone and top soil.
Here is the list of plants I used under the Oak tree:
Hemerocallis Daylily
Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans'
Iris ensata 'Crystal Halo'
Iris ensata 'Lion King'
Leucanthemum superbum Shasta Daisy
'Becky'
Phlox 'David's Lavender'
Phlox 'Laura'
Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm'
Perennials were purchased from Fairfax Perennial Farm: http://www.fairfaxperennials.com/
The project is finished. I created more planting areas in the lower section that received more sunlight.
Here are the plants I used:
Paeonia Peony pink & red double flowered cultivars
Hemerocallis 'Stella D'oro'
Rock garden plants by front walk:
Armeria maritima Sea Thrift 'Splendens'
